Outpatient Admissions
An outpatient admission occurs when a patient is admitted to the hospital, ambulatory center or surgical center for a surgical or nonsurgical operation, diagnostic procedure, or therapeutic procedure that does not require an overnight hospital stay. Preparation for outpatient admission varies with each procedure.
Common outpatient diagnostic procedures include:
EEG- may require a certain amount of sleep deprivation
Colonoscopy- may require special preparation like drinking certain prep liquids
MRI, CT scan
Barium swallow test
Laboratory tests- may require NPO (refrain from eating or drinking) within a specified amount of time
Common outpatient therapeutic procedures:
Respiratory therapy
Hyperbaric treatment,
Hydrotherapy
Wound care
Common outpatient surgeries include:
Repair of a broken bone or torn muscle
Hernia repair
Laproscopic cholesysectomy or appendectomy
Tonsillectomy and/or adenoidectomy
PE ear tubes
Outpatient surgery may be performed in inpatient operating suites, outpatient surgery suites, or procedure rooms.
Some times, patients will be required to visit the center or hospital a few days before the procedure to talk with the anesthesiologist and fill out pre-registration paperwork that provides health and insurance information.
Most often the patient will need to remain NPO (refrain from eating or drinking) within a specified amount of time prior to the procedure. The doctor will provide a complete list of instructions for the patient to follow.
