Microcephaly
From Holoprosencephaly
Definition of Microcephaly
Microcephaly is a term used to describe a small head, with head circumference more than 2 standard deviations below average for age, sex and gestation. Usually related to underdevelopment of the brain and sometimes related to craniosynotosis, a premature closure of single or multiple sutures of the cranial vault, face and base of the skull.
Microcephaly related to neurologic syndromes, genetic abnormalities or metabolic syndromes may be accompanied by a varying degree of health problems. Degree of impairment is directly related to underlying cause.
Treatment
There is no corrective treatment for microcephaly. However, surgical treatment may be necessary if skull deformities are present causing compression or preventing brain growth.
Management
Physicians monitor the condition by performing diagnostic tests when necessary, completing developmental assessments and periodically comparing measurement of head circumference to a sex/age appropriate growth chart. Long-term management focuses on optimizing abilities and treating other health complications.
