Gonadotropin Hormone Deficiency

From Holoprosencephaly

Jump to: navigation, search

Gonadotropin deficiency

Gonadotropin deficiency affects the reproductive system. LH and FSH stimulate structures in the ovaries of females and affects sperm development in the testes of males. This deficiency can affect fertility in men and women and menstruation in women.

Treatment

Replacement of gonadal steroids is common treatment for LH and FSH deficiency. Estrogen for women and testosterone for men will be prescribed in the lowest effective dosage possible. Male and female patients whose gonadotrophin deficiency results from hypothalamic disease may be successfully treated with a hypothalamic releasing hormone (GnRH), which can restore gonadal function. This treatment requires the assistance of a pediatric endocrinologist.
