DDAVP
Generic Name: Desmopressin
Uses:
DDAVP (Desmopressin) is a modified form of the normal human hormone arginine vasopressin used to prevent and control excessive thirst, urine production and dehydration in patients with central diabetes insipidus.
It may also be prescribed to reduce frequent bedwetting episodes in children and adults with enuresis by decreasing nocturnal urine production.
Forms:
DDAVP (Desmopressin) comes as a nasal spray, a nasal solution to be administered with a rhinal tube, as a pill, and as a solution for subcutaneous or intravenous injection.

This is an incomplete list of side effects for DDAVP (Desmopressin). For more information about this medication, please consult your physician.
headaches facial flushing nausea upset stomach or stomach cramps stuffy or runny nose reddening of the skin
Precautions:
- Inform your doctor and pharmacist of an allergy to desmopressin or any other drugs.
- Tell your doctor and pharmacist what prescription and nonprescription medications you are taking, especially carbamazepine (Tegretol), chlorpropamide (Diabinese), clofibrate (Atromid-S), demeclocycline (Declomycin), epinephrine, lithium, and vitamins.
- Tell your doctor if you have or have ever had heart disease, high blood pressure, coronary artery disease, nose or sinus problems or surgery, or cystic fibrosis.
- Follow your doctor's directions regarding fluid intake. Drinking too much causes water retention (bloating and swelling of the feet, ankles, and lower legs).
- Store nasal solutions in the refrigerator.
- Pill form may be crushed and diluted with water for g-tube administration. After dilution, give immediately because medication will adhere to syringe. This could possibly cause a reduction in the amount of the medication administered.
- Caregivers who administer DDAVP (Desmopressin) should avoid getting the medication on their skin and wash hands immediately after administration to prevent absorption.
- It may be necessary for the physician to monitor sodium and electrolyte levels frequently to assess for medication effectiveness. Keep all lab and doctor appointments.
