Adolescence

  • It is important to seek guidance from an endocrinologist and neurologist for pre-teens and adolescents to provide baseline assessments, monitor progression of puberty and treat problems associated with this period of growth.
  • It is important that caregivers seek guidance from the school system and state agencies in planning for vocational activities after high school. For more information about transition planning, see School and Education Issues
  • Before your child reaches the age of 18 years of age, it should be determined if he or she will be able to care for themselves. If not, you or someone you trust should be legally assigned as the conservator or guardian. Because there is an expense, it may be helpful to contact an attorney a year or months in advance to discuss the details of how this will be carried out. Also, at this time caregivers should consider estate planning. This is an important issue that may need the guidance of an attorney or financial planner. In the event of death or incapacitation of a caregiver, a state or other legal representative may have to assume the caregiver role. The wishes and financial status of the previous caregiver will be taken into consideration for the type and amount of services the dependent will receive.
